"Jack Dorsey doesn't run a Mastodon server, therefore it is weird and scary to me" is a hell of a take.

I was amused by Mastodon being "Twitter for San Francisco Gen Xers," because, as a San Francisco Gen Xer (who is not an anarchist furry, I'm not sure we even have any actually), my perspective on Mastodon is that "everyone I want to follow is here, why would I go anywhere else," so I guess you nailed it.

The burgeoning AI music scene reminds me a whole lot of the Vocaloid scene, and it certainly doesn't seem out of character for Grimes to try to turn herself into Hatsune Miku

It was very interesting to read your thoughts on Bluesky and your first experience with it. I agree with you that Twitter will probably never be a good, unified platform again. And your thoughts on what a "good" social network should be resonated with me. Perhaps it does. But if you think about it that way, Substack looks like a very good platform - yes, not without problems, but still. And here the creators are actively reading what users need, spending hours where they ask what they would like, and making something based on that. It turns out that they're not working on "anticipating features that users might need in advance," but working with feedback. What do you think about that?

Thank you for the description of Bluesky. That "main character" shit was awful and was part of why I left twitter in 2020, so now I know to never use the site.

I am trying to avoid all corporate sponsored social media. That would include blue sky along with Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, and others.

The exclusivity in social networks of which you speak is only attractive if you're part of the in-group. I consider myself a more passive Twitter user (I scroll a lot and don't reply/tweet often), and find the in-jokes and references something which makes the app kind of inaccessible and tedious. Sort of like an exclusive club: the people behind the velvet rope might be enjoying themselves, but those who can't get in kind of think they're assholes.

I don’t know what a dril is and now I’m ok with that.

Hmm, so, liking a nazi app like bluesky but disliking an explicitly antifascist app like Mastodon. Totally not a problematic thing to say in 2023.

Hey Ryan, can you figure out why I only see your emails in the Substack Reader now and not, well, in my emails? It feels like I'm no longer getting any Substack emails since the rise of Notes, and wondering if that's a bug or a design feature. Do you know what's up with that? Thanks!
