The programmed ads on newspaper and blog websites drive me crazy. It creates such a terrible user experience.

Be sure to check out this podcast series that interviews 60+ local news entrepreneurs about the trials and successes of running successful hyper-local news outlets. The hosts of the podcast include a former Deputy Managing Editor at the Boston Globe (who is now also part of a team starting a new local news outlet in suburban Boston), and a journalism professor at Northeastern University. The podcast can be found at whatworks.news/podcast/ . Most non-profit news outlets are going the non-profit route these days, and as you state in your article, are focused on only local news. Some have print publications. The digital-only publications are not relying on advertising much, if at all. It's subscribers/donors who power these publications.
