Happy August!
Summer is in full force and we are embracing it! Today we are visiting my home state of Idaho and my sweet niece, Adelaide (Addy), is giving us a front row seat to her hometown. I know you will love the treats Addy shares with you here as only a local knows all the best spots.
Addy is a wonderful young woman and artist with a deep heart. She’s been creating since she was very small and her artistic skills are phenomenal. She also has a deep he for love for animals and nature and you can always find her roaming with her sweet pups in the Idaho landscapes. When I get homesick, I can always count on Addy’s adventures on Instagram to give me doses of the land I know and love best. I’m certain our readers will appreciate all that Addy shares here about Idaho’s booming capital city: Boise. —Molly
”I never knew a man who took a bedroll into an Idaho mountainside and slept there under a star-studded summer sky who felt self-important that next morning.”
Frank Church (1924-1984) was an American politician and a prominent Democratic senator from Idaho known for his progressive stance on civil rights, environmental conservation, and opposition to the Vietnam War. Those of us who are Idahoans have him to thank for our many pristine wilderness areas.
Get Good Grub
My favorite restaurant to eat at in Boise is Yoi Tomo. I love sushi and have been going there for years. My favorite sushi roll is “Minions.” It is made on rice paper and has mango, tempura shrimp, crab, avocado, topped with lemon and a sweet mayo sauce.
I like to eat this roll last as a dessert because it’s a sweeter roll.
Libraries For the Win
My favorite book store would have to be the Boise Public Library. I can find any book I want to read there. It’s also a great study spot for me.
Get Outside!
My favorite outdoor activity is skiing up at Bogus Basin during the winter.
Bogus is only 40 minutes from Boise which makes it a quick and easy ski trip. I am able to go up and ski during the mornings and be at work for the night.
Bogus is also a great place to visit during the summer time. They have mountain bike trails across the entire mountain, live music during summer nights, and a lot of other recreational activities.
I also love driving up and enjoying a sunset because it looks over all of Boise.
After a Long Day
My favorite indoor activity would be going to get a cocktail at Press & Pony in downtown Boise. They make a mean Old Fashioned and if you ask the bartender, he might blow fire out of his mouth for you.
Addy’s Favorite Part of the City
I have many favorite parts of the city but my all-time favorite would be the Idaho Botanical Garden. I love going to outdoor concerts at the Botanical Garden during the summer time.
The gardens sit right below the foothills and are nestled below Table Rock. Table Rock is a great hike that is suitable for kids and adults. You can also go check out the Old Idaho State Penitentiary next to the Botanical Gardens.
Need an Idaho Gift?
My favorite shop is in downtown Boise called Idaho Made. It has all local vendors' artwork. This shop is great for a quick, meaningful gift.
I am also a local artist, you can check out my Instagram page at @art.by.adelaide. I have prints available and also do custom pieces.
Don’t Forget to Pack
The summers in Boise are HOT. Most summer days push 100 degrees, so bring your swimsuit and go hangout by the River or Quinn’s Pond.
Winters are great for going skiing up on the mountains, so bring winter gear.
In gratitude,
Adelaide Lyke
