Hello everyone, I’m so excited that I can finally reveal the witchy reason why I have been absent from Substack. An illustrated short story collection reimagining forgotten Flemish Folktales is coming!!! :-) But we need your help to turn this witchy dream into a reality which is why we have launched a Kickstarter campaign. Anything you can do to help is appreciated so much and we have a number of different rewards to show how much your support means to us including an exclusive hardback edition, handwritten Flemish spells, a Flemish magic box and so much more because anything you can do to help truly means the world!
About the Book
Flemish Folktales Retold is a collaborative project by Gatto Books from Signe Maene, Cate Zeederberg, and Kerria Seabrooke with Signe breathing new life into the age-old forgotten folktales of Flanders, Cate bringing these characters and haunted places to life with illustrations that capture the dark and enchanting folklore world in which they are set and Kerria editing this sometimes chilling, often strange, and eternally enchanting collection as well as overseeing the publication of the book.
This book will retell thirty-six tales which will be divided into six themes. The aim of the project is to remain truthful to the original tales as they were once told around the fireplace many moons ago, but to reimagine them, to give a voice to the shunned witches, explore the inner thoughts of creatures ostensibly described as grisly and ghastly, and immerse readers in the harrowing experiences of those unwantedly thrust into frightful narratives.
About the creators
Signe Maene is a Belgian writer of stories mainly inspired by Flemish folklore and blogs about that same world on Substack. She has worked on several projects for the Alternative Stories and Fake Realities Podcast that are based on folklore and her work has been published in The Copperfield Review, The Seelie Crow and Atrium Poetry. Signe is the co-founder of Salt & Mirrors & Cats, a literary zine that publishes stories, poems and art connected to superstitions. Visit Signe's website here.
Kerria Seabrooke is a writer, actor and filmmaker who has produced award-winning films, web series and animation for television. Her client list includes BBC, Paramount, CBS, MTV, and HBO. She was the voice of Daisy in MTV’s Life in The Virtual Hills and her film TINY NATION was screened at the Cleveland International Film Festival. Her work has been published in REAL: Regarding Arts and Letters and The World Almanac for Kids and she served three years on the Advisory Board for Full Sail University’s Entertainment Media Design & Technology Master of Science program. Visit Kerria's website here.
Cate Zeederberg is an artist, writer, and hobgoblin who loves talking to trees and howling in dark forests under the full moon. Her creations focus heavily on nature and the magic of storytelling with a penchant for portraiture and original characters steeped in lore. Beyond this mischief, Cate has a professional background in several creative endeavors including frontend web development, graphic design, copywriting, branding, resume editing, and kitchen witchery. She’s currently well kept by a grisly old owl and her tiny knight in shining tin foil. Visit Cate's website here.
Cool! I've just pledged. Good luck with reaching your target!
Thank you so much for backing the project! That means the world! :-)
Radical. I'm interested, but what happens if you don't get fully funded? How would I or someone get a hold of the book?
Thank you very much for your interest! In the case we don't get fully funded the book will probably remain unpublished so we're really hoping to get the funds and doing everything we can to promote it since the book has become very precious to us. :-)
