Substack is always changing. That's the one thing that stays the same around here. They're trying to bring us new design features that we haven't had before. But you do not have to go overboard with design. You'll notice that Substack is in reader view for a reason.

The idea was to privilege the writing and not force writers to have to bother with design. At the same time, I love Substack and have turned it into my author website. I had help. This is not my design. I had a wonderful web designer help me and it was fantastic. I wanted to be located in one place.

So now this is my website. When people come here, it's also my Substack and I have multiple Substacks on here, meaning I do something different every year. But our best-selling sub-stacker, Heather Cox Richardson, this is her sub-stack. Zero design. Zero. Absolutely zero design. You can design your homepage by going to branding and then to theme. Edit theme.

Substack’s design features are limited, which is a beautiful thing. You don't have to spend time branding and can get to building your Substack and achieving your goals instead.
