This might sound counterintuitive, but when it comes to creative projects, I find I’m able to FOCUS better if I stop rushing to the finish line and let myself play. I do better when I worry less about tuning out distractions and spend more time tuning in. When I give myself permission to ask questions, experiment, follow my curiosity, and be surprised, that’s when I find FLOW, that soft, easy energy that helps us make new connections and feel inspired.
If you’re struggling to write a book, because every time you sit down to write it feels like a grind or you feel distracted by your long to-do list, you’re not alone. I felt that way for years. Writing was heavy, thankless work. I almost quit going. But I missed it too much.
So I started paying attention to when I was in flow and I built more of those moments into the writing process I use to write all my books now.
I start SLOW and DREAMY.
I gather inspiration.
I take notes.
I journal about my project.
I find a touchstone that I can come back to throughout the writing process.
I let the process be mysterious and magical for as long as possible.
The truth is you’ll never be able to write a book if your heart isn’t in it. The good news is that you’ll make more progress and do more creative work if you ENJOY the process. I’m sharing my exact writing process in Before You Begin. It’s designed to energize your writing process and kickstart your next project, so you can set yourself up for success and actually enjoy writing.
If you dream about writing a book, but you don’t know where to start, this is the first step.
