A new conflict is underway as the US and Israel begin surgical strikes against Houthi targets, including in Sanaa, the capital of Yemen. What is taking place now dwarfs the previous engagement between the US and Houthis (under Biden) or even the Saudi conflict against the Houthis that was waged for years before the pandemic.

As US Secretary of State Marco Rubio made clear in a recent interview with US media, American forces will not allow Houthis to control the Red Sea, a vital shipping corridor where up to 15% of global trade passes through. According to the Pentagon, since 2023, the Houthis have attacked over 140 trade vessels and struck US warships 174 times.

All of this has now reached a boiling point.

Trump has launched the biggest military strikes of his second term on an Iranian-backed proxy, starting what can only be described as a “Houthi War 2.0.”
