For the Record, I Don’t Think Entrepreneurship Is for Everyone
There’s a selfish and stupid narrative online that if you have a job and don’t build a business, you’re some kind of underachieving loser. That drives me nuts.
Being an entrepreneur is a fast track to failure and frustration. Most people who quit their jobs to start a business fail, go broke, and then spend years beating themselves up over it. Employment has always been the fastest and most direct path to the middle class.
Almost all middle-class salaries create the opportunity for passive investing, which is how you escape the week-to-week paycheck and start generating wealth.
I even created a video breaking down the numbers on how you can get wealthy with a 9-to-5. This is especially true if you enjoy what you do.
So if you’re reading this, and you like your job and you’re living life on your terms, don’t fall into the bullshit marketing trap that you’re not a success in life because you get a paycheck.
That’s nonsense. Moving on.
That Said, The Numbers Do Not Look Good
The unfortunate reality is that having a 9-5 job puts you in a huge disadvantage in the economy.
Numbers don’t lie. Let’s get into it.
The relationship between wage growth and purchasing power is broken. Your money is worth less than ever before. It can buy less than ever before. So your raises aren’t actually raises. Sure, your paycheck might be going up, but the cost of existing is outpacing it. The dollar is worth less.
This is a massive problem because it means you’re falling behind through no fault of your own.
You might have a high-paying job you love, and if that’s true, good for you. Stay off Twitter and enjoy your life. But most people aren’t in that position. Most people are falling behind simply by participating in this system.
It’s not good.
The Way Out Is Through Entrepreneurship
Like it or not, this is the system.
I spent a lot of my youth being angry at the system. I was furious.
My dad spent 25 years throwing heavy suitcases into the belly of planes. He worked 60 to 80 hour weeks regularly. He herniated two disks. He drove to South Philly every morning to get to the airport. Then one day, shortly after 9/11, he was let go.
My mom was an ER nurse in North Philly. She helped the people who needed help the most. She made a modest living but loved what she did. One day, she got a notice that MCP, the hospital she worked at, was being torn down. They were building condos.
Within a year, my family went from getting by with a house full of love to being completely screwed financially. It changed everything.
The moment my dad called to tell me he was let go, I decided I was never going to have a boss who could decide whether I was allowed to make a living or not.
I haven’t looked back.
Because of my willingness to fail, my laser focus, and my commitment to the long term, I’ve been able to build a life for myself that I didn’t think possible for me and have been able to build a portfolio of income streams
I own assets. You can own assets too!
And it’s very difficult to get to this position unless you’re generating your own income through a business.
It has nothing to do with how hard you work, how determined you are, or how much you hustle. It’s about the math. Unless you develop the skills of entrepreneurship, it’s tough to get ahead in this system.
