80 percent of people facing ‘famine’ globally are in Gaza: Report

“Eighty percent of the people, or four out of five people, in famine or a catastrophic type of hunger [globally] are in Gaza right now,” said Arif Husain, the chief economist of the World Food Programme, speaking to the New Yorker magazine

Globally right now, there are about 129,000 people facing famine or a catastrophic type of hunger, said Husain, who works for the United Nations.

In Gaza alone there are 570,000 people facing famine or a catastrophic type of hunger, he added.

“The bottom line is that, in Gaza, pretty much everybody is hungry at the moment,” said Husain.
