Gov't issues warning after viral video of Cambodian women playing with rare ‘penis plants’

The Cambodian government has advised citizens and tourists against picking the rare carnivorous ‘penis plant’ over fears of extinction.

The warning comes after a video showed three women plucking the very rare plant’s flowers in Bokor Mountain in the Southeast Asian country’s Kampot province.

In the video that has since gone viral, the women can be seen excitedly holding the penis plants up to their faces as they compare their likeness to different penis shapes and sizes.

Cambodia’s Ministry of Environment, in a Facebook post, issued a stern warning, saying; “What they are doing is wrong and do not do it again in the future! Thank you for loving natural resources, but do not pick, (or) they will be ruined!”

Nepenthes bokorensis, as the plant is scientifically called, has modified leaves known as pitfall traps that lure insects with sweet-smelling nectar.

It has a long tube that resembles a pitcher, or a shaft of a penis, while a distinctive vaulted lid covers the tube, giving it resemblance to the phallic member.
