A global shortage of peas caused by a drought in Canada is posing challenges for makers of plant-based burgers who rely on the crop as a source of protein in their artificial meat.

Pea production fell by 45 per cent to the lowest levels in a decade after an arid summer on the Canadian prairies, according to government figures.

By late July a Canadian farming insurance company estimated that less than 20 per cent of crops in Alberta were in good condition. In early August Wayne Schneider, who grows canola, wheat, barley and yellow peas at Great West Farms in Nisku, said he had to harvest his crops early.
