What has 406 heads, 25 librarians, 51 weather presenters and one pronunciation manager? The BBC, it turns out.

The corporation, one of Britain’s biggest employers, has 1,741 staff who have “manager” in their title, a Freedom of Information request has shown.

The FOI asked the BBC to provide a list of every job title and number of staff in each role at the beginning of 2024. Auntie’s response showed that it had just over 17,000 employees at that time, working across 27 divisions.

The BBC’s largest job unit was journalism, where it has 5,244 staff. This does not include the 433 people in its presenter class, which includes 18 weather presenters, 22 senior weather presenters and 11 lead weather presenters.
