“KICK BACK” by Kenshi Yonezu is a song that was used as the Season 1 opening theme song of the 2022 TV Anime Series “Chainsaw Man”. It was first announced that Yonezu would be doing the opening song for this anime on September 19th, 2022 as the song was previewed in the final trailer for “Chainsaw Man”. It was also revealed that Daiki Tsuneta, the founder of Japanese bands King Gnu and millennium parade would be arranging the song and the song would feature a sample of Morning Musume’s 2002 song “Souda! WE’RE ALIVE” with the line “Dorokyu Mirai A BEAUTIFUL STAR” (Effort, Future, A BEAUTIFUL STAR) On October 11th of 2022, KICK BACK went on air with Chainsaw Man for the first time and was released on streaming services the next day. The MV was released on October 25th, 2022. The MV features Daiki Tsuneta as a guest star and shows Yonezu performing intense workout routines and parkour stunts. Yonezu seems to have a harder time with being productive while Tsuneta is able to do with ease, and this makes Yonezu want to strive for more while hurting himself in the process. The music video ends with hundreds of people dressed up as Yonezu racing up until the real Yonezu crosses the finish line first. KICK BACK is one of Yonezu’s most popular songs to date, up in the ranks of “Peace Sign” and “Lemon”. The song is big on platforms like YouTube and TikTok and was able to reach 100 million streams on Spotify easily in just under 2 months. The CD Single was released on November 29th, 2022 and contained one other song called “Hazukashitte Shouganee” (Ya’ll Should Be Ashamed).
