Negative Nancy says - ‘Founders find it happy to build the tools by themselves’
Me - It’s the other way round. Founders who value time would actually pay for SaaS solutions instead of reinventing the wheel. One of the biggest challenges for founders is to get the best out of their time. SaaS tools that save them time are an easy bet for founders.
Negative Nancy says - ‘Most founders buy NoCode tools. I am more interested in building a Technical solution.’
Me - There are profitable SaaS products both in code and no-code space. Some founders need technical solutions to improve their development process or power up their products. For example, some many founders and makers need non-technical solutions that help them concentrate on things like Growth Hacking, Blogging, etc.
Deep-dive & Some niches
Founders purchase SaaS solutions that help them either to save time or make more money. These are the only two reasons founders spend money on SaaS solutions. Let’s see some of the products that are typically bought by founders, makers, and builders.
Website builders: Create a website builder that just runs in the browser with a WYSIWYG editor/studio with drag and drop controls. This is similar to Carrd or Dorik. Users should be able to select from pre-built templates or start from scratch. Provide options for pretty much everything like - adding favicons, uploading social share images, social media icons, etc. Also, make sure to support a block-style architecture so that users can move or edit the blocks as needed without making major changes. Dorik made $10K in sales and profitable MRR in less than a year. Carrd is currently making $30K MRR.
Starter Kits that work with multiple databases/multiple modules: Most SaaS kits work with only one or two databases. Create a starter kit that works with multiple databases including cloud databases. Provide support for trending databases like Supabase as well. Also make sure to support multiple modules like billing, auth, user profiles, databases, email integration, analytics integration, etc. SaaSPegasus is making $50K/year. DivJoy is making $70K+ in annual revenue.
Generate websites from Data: While there are website builders that create landing pages quickly, there is a great need for tools that generate website pages from data dynamically from Google sheets, Supabase tables, Database, Airtable, etc. Create tools around this. There are two niches in this. The first niche is for people who want to build thousands of pages from Data and to use this site as a Growth Hacking site to build upon SEO over the long term. For example, tools like Webflow, Sheet2Site in this space are making huge money. The second niche is for users who want to build apps on top of data and provide secured access to this data with authentication etc. For example, tools like Softr and Pory are in this space making thousands of dollars in monthly revenue.
Productivity Apps: Founders (profitable founders) always try to optimize their time. Productivity apps help these founders to save time and help align the day-to-day tasks. Llama Life in this space currently has 700 paying customers. Llama Life solves productivity problem by using the concept called ‘timeboxing’, which is the practice of setting a fixed amount of time for each task. This creates a useful constraint, a finishing point to work toward. It also provides the mental space to focus, as it encourages you to tackle one thing at a time.
Website with Deals for Founders: Create a website that helps founders and makers to get deals on good products. You don’t need to build a lot of tech around this and you don’t need a lot of tech knowledge to build this. All you need is to work with companies who are interested to provide discounts, deals, free credits for founders and helping align the interest between the founders and companies. An MVP for a product like this can be built with a simple stack like Airtable, Softr, Pory, etc without spending thousands of dollars. JoinSecret in this space is making $18K/month by helping founders and builders.
Starter kit for the cloud: Cloud has started to grow exponentially in the last few years and is growing at a rapid pace. Create a starter kit for SaaS that purely works on top of cloud services. Start with one cloud provider - either AWS or Azure or GCP. You can safely ignore other cloud providers for now considering the current trend. Whatever cloud provider you select, make sure to support all cloud components. For example, if you select AWS, provide support for all AWS components - for database make sure to support AWS DynamoDB or AWS Aurora SQL, for backend APIs make sure to support AWS API Gateway, AWS Lambda, etc. For authentication, AWS has AWS Cognito that can be leveraged. The same is the case with GCP. If you select GCP, support all GCP services like Firebase Auth for authentication, GCP Cloud functions for backend APIs, GCP Storage for serving static files, GCP Firestore for NoSQL database, etc. See ServerlessPage for inspiration that is making $1200 MRR.
NoCode Agencies: NoCode tools are on the rise. The demand for NoCode tools is growing exponentially and most venture-backed companies and funded companies are trying to spend money on NoCode tools and build solutions. This has also increased the demand for people who has experience with NoCode tools. Born out of this need to find experienced NoCode developers who have experience with multiple tools, WeLoveNoCode is currently at $100K MRR.
