The Being Freelance Gift Guide

My guide to gifts for the freelancer in your life.
(Even if that’s you.)

GIFTS BY FREELANCERS

The great thing is, loads of the following gift ideas for freelancers are actually made by freelancers.

When you shop with freelancers, you effectively give a gift twice! Because they’ll get a festive flurry of £, $ or € in their direction.

Keep an eye out for the Being Freelance ‘Made By A Freelancer’ gift tag and take a look!

TOP BOOK IDEAS FOR FREELANCERS

Perma-favourites with the Being Freelance Community.
Many of the authors have been on the podcast too.

Anti-Sell (Steve Morgan)
Selling without the selling. I’m sold.

Keep At It (Ashwin Chacko)
Daily quotes & thoughts lovingly illustrated.

Hype Yourself (Lucy Werner)
Great advice for getting your business out there.

Keep Going (Austin Kleon)
Stay creative in good times & bad.

Win Without Pitching Manifesto (Blair Enns)
Solid advice - getting work & being paid well for it.

Company Of One (Paul Jarvis)
Bigger isn’t better. Unless it’s a Toblerone.

Survival Skills For Freelancers (Sarah Townsend)
Exactly what it says. Perfect for new freelancers.

SIX FIGURES IN SCHOOL HOURS, by Kate Toon

Kate’s Confessions Of A Misfit Entrepreneur book has been on the gift list for years and here’s her latest about running a successful business around your family.

She’s graced the podcast, a community Live Q&A and this year a BFF social in London when she was over from Oz. Kate is always wise, honest and funny.

If this sounds like it’ll help. I reckon it will.

MAKE A LIVING DESIGNING LOGOS, BY IAN PAGET

Okay, so you can tell from the title that this isn’t for every freelancer. But if logos/design/branding is your thing this labour of love from Ian is a must.

Ian AKA Logo Geek first appeared on the Being Freelance podcast in 2015 and again at a live podcast in 2019.

Logo & book geeks? This’ll be great.

BUY FROM AMAZON

Succeeding As A Young Entrepreneur by Harvey Morton

I’ve not had a chance to read this yet as it’s only just hit the bookstores, but I’m thrilled for BFF Harvey (that’s him).

This book shares his story of being bullied at school, told he wouldn’t succeed (by his teachers!), to winning his first business award aged 14 and beyond… (presumably he relives meeting a podcaster - with more than a passing resemblance to Hugh Jackman if he’d eaten too much cake and grown up in the UK - at a live event in 2019, looking forward to that chapter).

BUY FROM AMAZON

Founders, Freelancers & Rebels by Helen Jane Campbell

BFF & life/business coach Helen interviewed creatives in the UK & US for her book that’ll help you either getting started freelance, or to build up steam when the motivation is off the boil.

Hmm, tea anyone?

BUY FROM AMAZON

SUBSCRIPTION TO FREELANCER MAGAZINE

More accurately this is ‘MADE BY FREELANCERS’. A great team effort creating four excellent magazines dedicated to freelancing each year.

A subscription is the gift that keeps on giving.

Not a book. But plenty to read all year long.

BUY FROM FREELANCER MAGAZINE

PORTABLE Laptop Stand

Stop looking down at your laptop. You'll get a bad neck and that limits your ability to drink tea.

Logitech Brio 4k Webcam

Look crisp for Being Freelance Community virtual coworking.
This one adjusts to low light, so you’ll always look your best.

RøDE MINI USB MIC

USB mics are an easy way to sound great on video calls and podcasts. This mini one is robust to travel with too.

LAPTOP SUN SHADE

No sun on your screen is good for your eyes. Which means you can easily see your neighbours looking at your smug face.

Logitech Vertical Mouse

Gotta look after your wrists when you're your own Health & Safety Department.

LOGITECH LITRA BEAM LIGHT

I wanted a desk light. I also wanted a light for video calls.

This is perfect for both. It’s so adjustable. Controllable from the light itself or your computer.

Warm light. Cool light. A bright idea for a gift.

BUY IT FROM AMAZON

POWER BANK FOR A LAPTOP

Lots of people have power banks for their phones, but do a freelancer a favour and find one like this one that will charge a laptop too.

No more socket-searching in coffee shops or trains!

BUY SOMETHING LIKE THIS FROM AMAZON

Mechanical Keyboard

I see lots of freelancers using mechanical keyboards these days. Partly drawn by how they feel to type on, but also, just how customisable some can be. Different colours (to match your brand) and programmable keys.

This Logitech ‘pop’ model (available in other colours too) has changeable Emoji keys so the 🍪, 🙌 and 🙈 are never far away.

BUY FROM AMAZON

Branded Cube Lamp

Spotted my Being Freelance 3D Cube lamp on my Instagram or videos?

I love it. You can get anything printed on the six sides.
So if you’ve got a great logo and brand colours, why not let them shine?

BUY IT FROM UNIQ CUBE

A kindle

I know some people love physical books. But I love the fact I can easily take this anywhere.

You can’t smudge an e-reader when you drop cake on it.

BUY IT FROM AMAZON

TOMATO TIMER

Not all tech has to be expensive to make a difference.

The Pomodoro Technique is a juicy way to squeeze the most out of your time as a freelancer.

So a timer of any sort (that gets you away from your phone!) is genuinely a great gift.

Since the inventor used one of these kitchen timers (‘pomodoro’ being Italian for ‘smug productive so-and-so’), why not go for the original?

BUY IT FROM AMAZON

USB CUP WARMER

There's loads of really classy cup warmers to choose from. But of course I had to pick the one shaped like a cookie.

What you’re really giving is the gift of a cup of tea that doesn’t go cold!

BUY SOMETHING LIKE THIS FROM AMAZON

CLEAR HEADPHONES FOR VIDEO CALLS

Okay, so I wanted headphones that were ‘invisible’ when I did live video like giving webinars.

Bluetooth ones can be unreliable, so I settled on these Shure SE215 that musicians use.

Bonus is that they also block out external noise (so you can’t hear people saying ‘who do you think you are? Bono?!)

BUY FROM GEAR4MUSIC

COURSE FOR NEW FREELANCERS

I put it in the tech section because you’ll need a computer, phone or iPad to do the Being Freelance course.

But what better gift than helping someone get a head start on everything they need to know when starting freelance life.

If you’d like to buy a gift voucher for someone - get in touch.
