We all know not to judge a book by its cover, but Spotify Africa’s colourful campaign uses subtle comedy to remind us that we also shouldn’t assume someone’s music taste from their looks.

This lighthearted initiative, directed by Thati Pele through Giant Films, features three short spots; Rooftop, Basement, and Stokvel. Each story introduces a character listening to their favourite tunes, which turn out to be wildly different from what we might assume.

For example, in Rooftop, a young man joins a group of colourfully dressed, dancing youths. He shares his earphone with a friend, who is surprised to discover he is actually enjoying some heavy metal. In Stokvel, an older lady in a pink suit and fancy hat struts into a lunch date to the tune of her favourite rap.

The spots highlight that no matter how diverse your music taste, Spotify has the perfect playlists specifically customised for you.
