PENSACOLA, Fla. -- A Florida Senate bill passed this week that would ban abortions after six weeks.

The House version of the bill is expected to head to the floor in the next few weeks.

More than 60 percent of state senators voted in favor of Senate Bill 300,

It is getting close to this passing in the house.

This would make abortions illegal in Florida after six weeks instead of 15 weeks. The only exceptions are if the mother's life is at risk or if there's a case of rape or incest.

Even then, the procedure would have to be done before the 15-week mark.

The bill includes $30 million for the state health department to expand programs that support contraception, parenting and pregnancies.

"If someone is going through some terrible circumstance where they believe an abortion is their only option, then let's have a discussion on that underlying cause of that distress," Northwest Florida Rep. Alex Andrade said.

When would this take effect? It depends.

Current Florida law says you can't get an abortion after 15 weeks, but that's being reviewed by the Florida Supreme Court.

If that gets overturned, then it would impact the six week ban.

If it's upheld, then we could see this become law.
