Heluna Health invites applications for the part-time year-round position of a Community Health Youth Intern with the Community Health Equity & Promotion (CHEP) Branch of the San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) – The Youth United Through Health Education (YUTHE) program and Sexual Health Services.

YUTHE is a program of the Community Health Equity & Promotion Branch of SFDPH. The YUTHE Program is also a professional development and peer education internship designed to introduce youth and young adults to the field of Public Health and address health disparities in San Francisco. Staff is trained to promote sexual health using a culturally appropriate approach to help reduce health disparities among African American youth in San Francisco; as well as help youth and young adults learn how to protect themselves from HIV and other STDs. The goal of the program is for the Intern to spend approximately one (1) to two (2) years in the position to gain a wide range of public health knowledge and on the job skills, to increase STD screening among sexually active adolescents in San Francisco and to use preventive health services to ultimately decrease the rates of STDs and reduce health disparities.

Under the supervision of the Program Coordinator, the Community Health Youth Intern is responsible for creating a health promotion plan for teens and young adults; conduct community health educational workshops and activities on various health topics; assist with online outreach and promotion using social media channels, posting content, ensuring timely response, managing social media programs, and ensuring sexual health messages are carried out across all of our social media channels, including but not limited to Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Snapchat and any emerging channels; develop relevant sexual health education/resources materials; perform venue-based and street outreach in various locations throughout the city of San Francisco; present at conferences and meetings for at risk youth and/ or other organizations.

This is a temporary (1-2 years), grant-funded, part-time (20 hours), benefitted position. Employment is provided by Heluna Health.

Pay range: $18.28-25.01 per hour

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
• Attends sexual health and professional development trainings
• Works collaboratively and individually to create a strategic plan for peer-led health education events/activities
• Performs routine clerical tasks related to maintaining records of the program
• Builds relationships with communities to encourage routine sexual health screening
• Seeks out opportunities to work with youth organizations and other DPH branches to create, implement, publicize and deliver health promotion programs and events
• Serves as a health information and referral resource
• Serves as the liaison for the Community Health Equity & Promotion and Disease Prevention & Control Branches
• Conducts street and venue-based outreach activities in Bayview, Hunters Point, Fillmore/Western Addition, Potrero Hill, Sunnydale Visitacion Valley, Castro, South of Market, and Tenderloin in all weather conditions
• Develops appropriate workshops and lead groups to address sexual health topics for youth and community-based organizations
• Develop and post content as assigned for Sistas Leadership for African American Youth (SLAY) and Youth United Through Health Education (YUTHE) program in several social media channels including but not limited to Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Snapchat and any emerging channels
• Performs activities per established protocols and procedures
• Provides data entry on weekly basis for workshops, condom distribution/outreach events
• Takes on role as Team Lead for projects, delegating tasks to workgroups and maintaining contact with workgroups to ensure follow-thru and completion
• Meets weekly with supervisor to maintain communication and progress towards established goals
• Administers surveys as assigned
• Performs other related duties as

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience
High school graduate or GED and/or currently enrolled in college One (1) year verifiable experience, gained within the last three (3) years, working with the public and with youth and/or adults

Other Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
• Knowledge of Photoshop is desirable
• Experience using social media platforms, including but not limited to Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Snapchat and any emerging channels
• Collaborate with various interns, colleges and social marketing agency staff members to create content for social media channels
• Ability to organize and manage a variety of projects simultaneously and complete duties in a timely manner
• Ability to plan and use good judgment; ability to work independently and efficiently
• Detail oriented with ability to follow instructions and follow-up on assigned tasks
• Ability to show initiative; not afraid to ask questions
• Excellent interpersonal and verbal communications skills with youth and adults
• Ability to communicate in writing clearly and concisely using appropriate spelling, grammar, and punctuation
• Must be familiar with standard business office practices and etiquette
• Highly desirable to be able to operate a computer; proficient with Microsoft Office suite (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
• Knowledge of STD’s and HIV
• Ability to perform work accurately and thoroughly
• Attention to the minute details of a project or task
• Ability to proactively find solutions to work-related problems
• Able to effectively work as part of a team

SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS
• Must be flexible, due to monthly community events
• Must have access to reliable transportation (BART, Muni, bus, car, etc.)
• Must be comfortable and willing/able to work in any neighborhood in San Francisco, particularly Bayview, Hunters Point, Fillmore/Western Addition, Potrero Hill, Sunnydale Visitacion Valley, Castro, South of Market, and Tenderloin in all weather conditions
• Must be willing to work with diverse ethnic groups and individuals of diverse sexual orientations, sexual interests, gender identities, youth and adults
• Must be willing to be cross trained to help address other health issues, including but not limited to nutrition, healthy retail, smoking cessation, cannabis education and heart disease
• Willingness to be trained about STDs and work with the public
• Must be comfortable speaking to groups about sexual health issues
• Must be willing to be trained in sample collection related to STD/HIV testing
• Must have ability to walk several blocks for a couple of hours at a time
• Must be willing to wear YUTHE apparel while conducting workshops at community events and street outreach in the field
• Must be available to attend monthly branch meetings and other meetings as assigned
