Judiciary Committee Passes Two Hageman Sponsored Bills

February 29, 2024

Washington, DC – Today, the House Judiciary Committee passed two bills sponsored by Congresswoman Harriet Hageman. HR 4848, Censorship Accountability Act, and HR 2595, Forfeiture Funds Expenditure Transparency Act.

Rep. Hageman stated, “H.R. 4848, the Censorship Accountability Act that I introduced with Congressman Dan Bishop last August, is a massive step forward in restoring the First Amendment rights of countless Americans who have been endlessly attacked by unelected federal bureaucrats. The work that we have done in the Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government has revealed shocking accounts of how FBI agents and other federal officials have censored and suppressed our rights to free speech and practice of religion, surveilled parents attending school board meetings, and created a two-tiered system of justice. Until now, there has not been a mechanism to hold the bad actors within federal agencies personally accountable for violating our rights. The Censorship Accountability Act provides American citizens the grounds to sue federal officials who violate their First Amendment rights, even for censoring their social media posts.

“The second bill, my Forfeiture Funds Expenditure Transparency Act, will hold state and local officials accountable for how they use property and funds seized through criminal convictions. Last year, it was revealed that such funds were being weaponized by New York City District Attorney Alvin Bragg to finance his political witch hunt against President Trump. It is an appalling perversion of justice that these public funds, allotted to local governments to help citizens, have been used to fuel the persecution of political adversaries. If passed, my bill will require any group that receives forfeiture funds to report on the amount and type of assets received and the way in which those funds are used.”
