Sigmund Freud was born. One of the most influential and controversial thinkers of the 20th century, Freud developed psychoanalysis as a method of exploring the unconscious mind. As well as giving rise to various psychological and psychotherapeutic techniques, the influence of psychoanalysis extended to a wide range of social and cultural contexts such as art, literature and film.
