THERE ARE NO COINCIDENCES NEO

The Matrix was filmed at multiple locations along Pitt Street in Sydney’s Central Business District, which served as the primary setting for the film’s generic metropolis. Key scenes shot at or directly on Pitt Street include:

  • Martin Place and Pitt Street Intersection: This area features the Lloyd Rees Fountain, where Neo and Morpheus undergo combat training with the "woman in red." The surrounding streetscape also includes the Westin Hotel (formerly the General Post Office), where Neo experiences the "deja vu" glitch involving the black cat.

  • Pitt and Hunter Street Intersection: Located one block north of Martin Place, this corner housed the iconic phone booth from which Neo makes his final call to the machines and subsequently flies into the air at the end of the film.

  • Pitt Street Business District: The street itself and adjacent buildings like the Colonial State Bank Centre (52 Martin Place) and Aon Tower (201 Kent Street) were used for various chase sequences and government building interiors.

Sydney’s CBD was chosen because its anonymous skyscrapers helped create a non-specific American city aesthetic, avoiding the use of highly recognizable local landmarks in many shots.

Look at the crowd. People really are NPCs.
