I totally understand where they’re coming from, Melanie. For some reason these days, everyone feels overwhelmed. There’s always far more we need to do than we’ll ever be able to do. So changing from the meals we can cook with our eyes closed to something new, or making time for significant exercise can feel like too much.

We can rationalise and think, ‘Maybe I can just live with the extra few inches around my waist.’

But it’s not about those inches. Multiple studies have shown that improving diets, and getting more sleep and exercise can potentially add a decade or more of healthy life. Now that seems to me to be worth making an effort for.

Excellent piece Dr. Jones! I've never quite understood why people want to solely focus on diet or solely on exercise to reduce belly/visceral fat. Besides the fact that you can't spot reduce in general, optimizing both your nutrition and physical activity are going to be better together than either alone.
