Hurricane Helene has a Critical Lesson for All of Us. Exploring the dangers of putting profits before people, especially when they are hidden behind a veil of secrecy. By A Midwestern Doctor (10/02/24, new related references added 10/06/24)
AMD always has an interesting and thoughtful perspective, and this article is no exception. He opens with a summary:
Recently, the East Coast was hit by a devastating hurricane that swept through Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Kentucky and Virginia, with [many] deaths in that region already been confirmed. Furthermore, unlike a typical hurricane, it also wiped towns off the map and was the worst hurricane in North Carolina’s history (with the possible exception of one in 1775).
Here’s just a very quick summary, but this long article is well worth reading in full.
The VP debate moderator focused on “the climate change boondoggle.”
Doctor Thyself: Lack of drinkable water and medical care.
People need to use their natural capacity to learn and think critically.
People do not need a doctor to be healthy. (includes mention of DMSO and the COVID response).
People need alternate sources of clean water in case of disaster.
Disaster Capitalism
Human tragedies viewed as an opportunity for personal gain.
Too many in positions of power (e.g., in business or the government) view their subjects as tools to exploit rather than actually caring about their wellbeing.
FEMA tells people not to support local relief efforts while refusing to help anyone and asking for all the relief money (includes a two-minute video that echoes our local experiences regarding Idaho wildfire fighting via federal agencies)
Helene’s Aftermath
Unique geographical and meteorological conditions created the disaster.
Insurance won’t cover many losses (similar to Maui).
Before and after stories, including a JD Vance video.
Destroyed infrastructure.
Democracy and Public Relations
Biden administration doing very little to help the hurricane’s victims (but includes possibly staged photo-ops).
Federal response started only after Trump and Elon Musk began visiting, setting up donations, and delivering aid directly (e.g., Musk has sent hundreds of Starlink kits to re-establish internet communications and make propaganda less likely).
NC is a swing state during a highly contested election season.
Hurricane Helene and its aftermath are being used for propaganda purposes.
How will the ruling class respond? Double down on their existing model of control through terror and censorship (Kerry, Biden, Harris, Walz); or, trust an educated and empowered citizenry to do the right things.
Conclusion
We need to stop putting profits before people. Examples: Suppressing therapies like DMSO; allowing doctors to treat COVID patients with therapies that worked; withholding hurricane or fire disaster aid people need so someone else can benefit from the tragedy.
