Milton Friedman's Posthumous Recommendations for Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) (11/19/24)

Milton Friedman was asked what would do with a laundry list of Federal Cabinet-Level Departments shortly before he died of heart failure at age 94 on 11/16/2006:

Retain:

  • Defense

  • Justice

  • State

  • Treasury

Partially retain:

  • Health and Human Services (HHS) — abolish about half of it, including at least some research

Abolish:

  • Agriculture

  • Commerce

  • Education

  • Energy — except move to Defense areas that tie in with the military

  • Housing and Urban Development (HUD)

  • Interior (sell off all “government owned” lands except those with federal government buildings)

  • Labor

  • Transportation

  • Veterans Affairs
