Inspired by Brad Mehldau and his piece about Jon Caramanica’s comments about Billy Joel, I wrote about the value of traditional music criticism in the age of video podcasts, what exactly made writers like Greg Tate so well-respected and whether or not we even need a New York Times music critic in 2026.

As a teenaged music journalist from a flyover province, I always wondered what made the critics in NYC so special that it was their opinions that formed the canon. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized that the only thing they have over anyone is a 212 area code. Their location is often their only advantage. The best music writer in the world today lives in Columbus, Ohio.
