Chinese auto manufacturer BYD spent big bucks on #UEFAEURO2024 as an official global partner, only to send some German viewers to the wrong site for sex toys.
There’s so much traffic that the owner of byd.de put up a notice to basically say: please go to byd.com if you came here from watching football!
I can’t believe BYD made such a rookie mistake given that it announced a major dealer for German market almost 2 years ago.
On the flip side, it serves an important lesson for all ambitious Chinese brands who are eyeing on global markets. (I won’t say ‘vice versa’ because mobile has long beaten desktop for Chinese internet users, so it makes more sense for overseas brands to be present on social platforms than having a dedicated Chinese domain, unless for data privacy reasons.)
