different political tribes can end up inhabiting distinct realities—different epistemic universes—without “tribalism”. They might disagree not because one is categorically right and the other wrong, or because one “knows the facts” whilst the other doesn’t, but because they know different facts—different histories, anecdotes, statistics, grievances—and interpret them through conflicting systems of categories, stories, and explanatory frameworks. In such cases, what seems like ignorance and delusion to one community might simply be the product of a distinct system of interpretation, relevance, and salience within another.
