Good post! Fingers crossed 🤞 Part of the issue and source of uncertainty here is that advances in generative AI aren't only impacting educational institutions. They will also transform the economy and broader society within which such institutions exist, adjusting the relative value of different skills and changing the ways people compete for status. And the risk here is that the kind of knowledge and skills universities at their best provide will be valued less in a world in which white collar intelligence is on tap from machines, and that the credentialing function of universities ends up screening for traits that lose their value. Expanding college enrollment and the growing prestige of the cognitive elite in recent years has coincided with the expansion of the knowledge economy within nations and internationally, and there’s a big question about how AI will impact this economy. There's a world in which AI increases the returns to biological intelligence but also a world in which it reduces them.
