These reflections have made me more “conservative” in some ways. Not conservative in the sense of modern right-wing populists, who combine the far left’s one-sided hostility to liberal democracy with a reckless disregard for the institutions that make it function. I’ve become more conservative, rather, in the broadly Burkean sense of appreciating the extraordinary difficulty and fragility of civilisation and the achievements of modern liberal states.
