Don: Hey, Jenn.

Jenn: Yeah?

Don: Earlier today I was thinking about that book I’m reading about the nature of time, and I decided to conduct an experiment. You wanna hear about it?

Jenn: [Sighs] I’m trying to write out this invoice, but, sure. [Puts down her pen and looks at her husband]

Don: Okay, so I was thinking about the future. And I really wanted to figure out if it’s real or not. So I was looking at my phone on the table and I thought to myself, “I’m going to pick up my phone in the future. Right now, it’s the present. My phone is on the table and my hand is poised here in the air; that’s now. The phone being in my hand is the future.” And then I very, very slowly [demonstrates with his hand] moved my hand down toward the phone while trying to be one-hundred percent alert to what was happening. As my hand moved closer and closer to the phone, I noticed it always felt like now, not the future. And then I closed my fingers around the phone and picked it up, and guess what?

Jenn: What?

Don: It was still now.

Jenn: Wow.

Don: It wasn’t the future, it was the present.

Jenn: Ah, ha.

Don: So, I think I’ve proven that there is no such thing as the future. The future is just an idea. It’s not a real thing. And that means time isn’t real. It’s just…always now.

Jenn: [Smiles] That’s quite an experiment. Einstein would be proud of you.

Don: That’s what I’m thinking.
