Micro-Fiction - From Mundane to Weirder:

Yarn over, pull through, yarn over, pull through. The crochet hook’s rhythm was a calming one as the blanket across her knees grew to its final proportions.

“What shall we make next?” The crocheter wondered to the fire. “A cup of tea, first, I think. And then, shall we start a baby blanket?” The log on the flames burst with the heat, the crack sent sparks up the chimney. On the rug, the cat stretched and turned to warm its other side. The log settled into place. The woman reached out her rheumatic fingers for the tassled end of her silver sewing scissors. She tied off the blanket and then, with a contented sigh, cut the thread. She stood to fetch the kettle. Outside, a cry of grief rose through the air, the taste of loss flooding the room.

“Maybe a pretty buttercup yellow.” She muttered as she started making the tea. “I was surprised how long that last one took! I hope the next one is quicker.”

With her cup of tea in her hand, she returned to her chair and reached out for the ball of wool. She lifted her hook and made the first stitch. Somewhere, in the darkness, the cry of a newborn life slashed the grief with joy.
