I was born in New Jersey and grew up in Union City (Havana on the Hudson). My childhood was that of being surrounded by a culturally diverse population. To me, segregation and systemic racism seemed to no longer exist. That is, until my late teen years, when we moved to Texas via Miami, Florida. It was then that, despite being called a spic many times before moving South, I would realize just how bigoted America still was.
