For this Macabre Monday, I want to follow up on my earlier note on Terraria. Yesterday, my brothers and I defeated the Moon Lord - the final boss of the game - and effectively beaten the game.
For fun, I took a screenshot to show off the Steam achievement I got.
So how does going through the second half of the game change my take on the macabre aspects of the game?
First, I want address the question I asked in the first note: are we the bad guys in Terraria?
As I said before, the world became much more dangerous in hard mode. And nothing pronounced this than the fact that we lost NPCs on a near-constant basis. Our Wizard NPC was unfortunate enough to be housed in an area where enemies tend to spawn so he gets killed, a lot. Also, every time an invasion happens, whether it be the goblins, the pirates, or the martians, a couple NPCs gets killed, if not the (vast) majority.
So we definitely put the denizens of our towns in danger by our actions. And we got them killed so many times I lost count.
But that doesn’t necessarily mean we’re the bad guys. Are we just supposed to sit around while the cultists do their demonic rituals?
This brings me to the final boss, the Moon Lord, pictured on the bottom right. This guy screams “Lovecraftian”, just look at the tentacles on his face. Unfortunately I was too busy fighting the guy my initial impression of him was ‘big old guy with superpowers’.
But anyways, the Lovecraft references in this game is off-the-charts. This is something that I neglected to mention in my first note… somehow. I mean, one of the first bosses you fight is the ‘Eye of Cthulhu’.
So that’s Terraria. It’s a surprisingly long game. I’ve first played it about 5-6 years ago, perhaps even more, and this was the first time I’ve beaten it. Now it’s time to go back to Trails to Azure.
