I felt this acutely when I went on a nearly all-French brand trip recently. The thing is, though, I don’t think “at least some” French is enough. Even if I can speak and understand basic French, what really matters in understanding the French POV is not only the more complex vocabulary and slang, but the cultural undertones which will take years/decades for me to truly understand and even begin to see fashion through a truly French lens.
If you're a fashion journalist attending fashion weeks in Paris and Milan year after year, learning at least some French or Italian should be considered part of the job.
Not because pronunciation matters.
Because culture matters.
