I don’t think it will revive the low vs. high culture debate anywhere it isn’t already very… vivified. The high culture side has been railing against low culture slop for several years, and the intellectual defenders of low culture have mainly just repeated the same poptimism logic.

I think where you will see a debate is specifically on the low culture side, which is the actual target market for AI slop. And it will be a contrast between “authentic” low culture (mass produced pop culture) and even lower culture (AI slop). Most of the people I know who are, for instance, diehard romantasy ebook readers are also very anti-AI: they’ve made peace with their own taste (and I salute them for it frankly even if I don’t share it) and are now fighting what amounts to a rear-guard action against complete mass production of content in the form of AI.

For better or worse, I expect GenAI to revive the distinction between high/innovative/artistic and low/formulaic/mere entertainment that the poptimists largely defeated in recent decades.
