โ๐ฎ๐ฑ๐ฑ๐ง "Finish Them First": The View from Jerusalem vs. The Reality in Lebanon
The Street Sentiment:
In downtown Jerusalem, some Israelis are openly dismissing the possibility of immediate peace with Lebanon, arguing that a decisive military victory must come first. Speaking to the Associated Press, one resident, Yaniv Matsree, bluntly summarized this stance:
"I think we should finish with them. After we finished with Hezbollah, we can try and make peace with Lebanon."
The Reality on the Ground:
However, "finishing off" Hezbollah comes at a devastating cost to Lebanese civilians who have absolutely nothing to do with the militant group. According to recent figures from Lebanon's health ministry, the conflict has already killed well over 1,850 people. The strategy of demanding total decimation first and peace later is much easier to advocate for from Jerusalem than it is to survive in Beirut or southern Lebanon.
The Official Stance:
This street-level sentiment mirrors the directives coming from the very top of the Israeli government. While Prime Minister Netanyahu recently approved upcoming direct negotiations with Lebanon, he explicitly stated that a ceasefire in Lebanon is currently not on the table and that the military will continue its strikes.
My Take:
Given the ongoing bombardment and the outright refusal to entertain an immediate ceasefire during negotiations, the reality seems clear: Netanyahu is not actually looking for peace. He is looking for total military capitulation, regardless of the civilian toll.
