In the very hot summer of George, Breonna, and Ahmaud, we seemed to be on the brink of a third Reconstruction. But that moment from 2020 was lost. Now, we're in a time when people like Tucker and Charlie Kirk talk about racial equality as white oppression. Bakari Sellers joins Tim Miller today.
show notes:
Great interview!!!!!!
Thanks. I will read Bakari’s book; thanks, also the work you do.
"what's the guy who's not that smart?"
I would have loved to hear Tim get to the 20th or 30th name until he got it correct.
Wow. Can we just make Bakari Sellers a permanent weekly guest? He’s just fascinating. I want to hear his takes on everything. And, as usual, Tim’s a better interviewer than most people who’ve made interviewing their entire career. *COUGH* Bill Maher.
Outstanding program! Tim, you are nailing this!!!
Loved this podcast. Mr Sellers brings fresh insight to what can be stale topics. Wonderful advice to Tim for his daughter, and for any parent with a young daughter.
"My village is probably doper than most" might be the best line in Bulwark podcast history.
The "equality feels like oppression" formulation Sellers used was, by itself, worth my subscription for this month.
Tim! You are nailing this Bulwark podcast thing.
Tim: This was a show.
The advice Bakari gave to Tim about black girls brought tears to my eyes. I had a similar conversation with my daughter about 25 or so years ago, and she knows that she’s going to have to do the same with her children. Not much has changed! I have a Hispanic, Irish, and Filipino daughter and she was constantly ctiticized and questioned about her looks. The challenges our children deal with because of others’ parents (because they are children who are influenced by their families) are heartbreaking. Please bring Bakari back to the podcast!
Excellent discussion. Love the show!
Great show. You are a becoming a superstar Tim. Loved your book- devoured it. This interview with Bakari was epic!! So good. Stay healthy- F Trump.
What a lovely man. Thanks for introducing him.
Awesome pod, Mr Sellers was just great...and you were too Tim, though you always are
( It doesn't hurt that he has an awesome voice and he is very handsome man...lol)
Hope to hear from him again
I will try to find the book at the library, or wait till I have money to buy it...
Thanks to both of you
That was just a sweet & completely unexpected answer to your question about your daughter. Good interview with Bakari. I also loved the song at the end!
Another book for me to order and read...thank you for bringing Mr. Sellers on as a guest.
One of your best shows EVER!
I really enjoyed today's podcast and just ordered his book. Bakari Sellers, I hope we see more of him in Democratic Party leadership.
Other than what a great episode, Tim, you are so right about that book portrait cover. Yum. His speaking voice and its depth is very wonderful and one wants to listen some more. I wanted to hear more about his childhood, meeting all those amazing people and his father.
and thanks for Leon Bridges at the end🤩
Thank you, I was trying to figure out who that was. Doesn’t that just figure?!?
Amazing conversation.
I loved his advice about voting rights but isn’t this what Biden did in 2020 but couldn’t get any republicans to sign onto a bill? Isn’t the issue the filibuster and the number of dem senators.
Bakari with the deep South Carolina pull:
he said Glenn McConnell when he meant to say Mitch McConnell. Search on the internet for “Glenn McConnell neo-confederate.” Despite the Freudian slip, Bakari’s point was applicable nonetheless.
I was deeply moved by Bakari Sellers' answer to Tim's final question. While I was aware of the doll studies he mentioned, the words he opened with were equally eloquent and beautiful.
Tim, Bakari's sign-off that he'll see you for a beer in Chicago (for the Dem convention) gave me this idea, since I'll be in Chicago some time over the summer: The Bulwark should have some kind of presence, somewhere, where we can hang together at some time.🙏
Fantastic episode. Love Sellers's range of perspectives and experiences is incredible. I'm excited to read his book.
Great interview so far. I haven't finished listening yet because as he spoke about his father, it reminded me of Mr. Harry Belafonte. What's interesting to me is that Mr. Selkers' father and Mr. Belafonte are in agreement here. As bad as things were back then, I think they imagined that we would be sooo much further by now. Coincidentally, I just watched the video of MLK Jr on meet the press, where he was being met with pretty harsh questions about "stopping all that demonstrating" by a bunch of white men who seemed to just want things to calm down. So, wow, we have come far, but we have so much more road to travel. The biggest problem is that after 2020, I think most people just sort of moved on - in search of everything just calming down. Notice the commonality? So once again the moderate wants calm and is willing to allow others to pay any price in service of that calm.
Good interview! I’m not familiar with Bakari. I’m older and from the south so I remember the history he describes. I don’t think younger people understand in their bones how different it was and how bad. People like Bakari help us remember and do better. Tim thanks for the wide diversity of guests you are bringing on the show. Informative.
Wow, that was amazing! His advice at the end was so powerful and profound. Thank you Tim.
I agree! Whole interview / discussion was wonderful and insightful... but, whew, those final notes got me.
