I’m going to say something that shouldn’t be controversial but will be. If you are a Christian, you can support border control and immigration being legal vs illegal. You CANNOT celebrate deportations and get off on the cruelty, and be a real Christ follower. Period

I wonder how many tea party supporters who carried a copy of the Constitution in their pocket are full-on in the administration’s contempt for the First and Fifth Amendment? Or have they burned that little book in honor of the Supreme Leader?

They knew that Rumeysa Ozturk had done nothing wrong. They sent masked men to grab and detain her anyway.

They knew Abrego Garcia had a protection order from deportation. They sent him to a foreign jail anyway.

They know the Supreme Court has told them that Abrego Garcia must be returned. They don’t care.

There is no debate any more. This president is a direct threat to the Constitution of the United States.

This is extremely insightful from Tim Snyder.

I’ve occasionally regarded him as hyperbolic in the past - mainly because the actions of the first Trump term were not matched by Trump’s words and obvious intent. But this term is markedly different. And much much darker.

I was right back in 2016 about who Trump is. It is now catastrophically…

Great article, guys! I’m curious about the moving fast philosophy. While I was working on my startup, where we created custom software for clients, we always took the time to write clear onboarding documents and set up steps for the team working on the project later. But these were smaller projects, so I thought that’s why anyone could get it running in hours.

However, working now in an enterprise with a more complex project, I assumed that it was normal for me to need a day for setup.

But now re…

As usual, there are trade-offs.

I mentioned that this was not fast or easy or straightforward at Amazon. The main reason for that is that Amazon is distributed. From a code perspective, they have millions of separate code repositories, thousands of independent teams that choose how they want to work, etc.

Meta has a monolithic repository (monorepo) where tens of thousands of developers work in the same code base. Engineers work across team boundaries all of the time. This centralization makes it possible to build a consistent developer environment.

It also makes it trivial to fix a bug that requires one-line changes across a dozen teams’ code. At Amazon this would take one hour change would take weeks of negotiations.

So, everything comes with trade-offs. Amazon teams are self contained and have a ton of autonomy, which entails a varied and non standardized developer experience.

Design choice:

When the db reads a page from disk it needs free memory in the shared buffers to place the page in.

It can:

1) Allocate the memory right there and then

or

2) Allocate all buffers memory at startup, then look for a free slot using a data structure when needed
