Just read an article about the mental load on BBC news in which many of the women interviewed cited maternity leave as the reason women are loaded with the invisible tasks of running a household. It suggested that because women are at home for longer in the initial stages of parenthood, they become ‘the default parent’ early on. I’m not sure about the presumption that the mental load occurs just for parents. Do you know or have experience of women carrying the mental load in child-free heterosexual partnerships?
